Assignment 1:Understanding Design Elements and Composition – Patterning: Nature vs Manmade
4 photographs, 5 principle combos.
Produce 2 patterns resembling the nature and man-made.
Progress
The nature of this assignment required one to walk, observe, and investigate your mundane surrounding environment. The aims are to record, identify, and describe natural and man-made (built) forms observed and captured from your surrounding environment as integrated form of findings in one's visual research study.
Photography
Many pictures were taken as I took a stroll around my neighborhood. I made sure they are aligned to the project, such as being a mixture of both nature and man-made, as well as it has rich design elements and principles to be extracted.
Finalization
4 photos had to be finalized. I absolutely loved the rhythm and natural design formation of water ripples. However, I was not allowed to use that picture as it was not natural (it was staged in the a bathtub). Nevertheless, I headed to a lake when it was drizzling to take some shots of water ripples so the shot could be natural
Design Studies
Before analyzing the required design elements and principles, I found some reference books online and read up on them to supple myself with more design knowledge outside my course syllabus.
This process was my favorite; the one that made me fall in love with design. I began learning and seeing unseen things that was in plain eyesight, yet beauty seems to be visionary only to the brain but not necessarily to the eye.
Design Analysis
The 4 photographs were then analyzed with infographics as well as short and sweet connotations. I also made sure each pages were neat and tidy by having an arranged format (eg. sketch in the middle). The full document is attached below
Design Ideation with Principles
A few designs and patterns were then ideated to align with each given principles. I tried to vary the designs as much as I can as part of ideation stage, so the final outcome would not be limited to only a small pool of ideas. Attached below is the full document.
Final pattern Ideation
A few patterns were drawn as a quick draft before finalization on the final piece. They were also tested out in different variations to ensure the final results were confidently the greatest it can be
Final outcome
After some experimentation, the patterns were finalized with felt-tip pen on Art Block paper. Different line-weight were used to accommodate the art piece respectively,
Final Work
Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
As the name of the module, I became capable of thinking creatively and critically, especially in the Define stage. I've grown to be capable of analysing problems and ideas and arrive at decisions in order to proceed.
Final Work
Attached is the full document of the submission.
Reflection
Lifelong Learning
I've learned to progress independently apart from the weekly tutorials available and be disciplined. I was also intellectually engaged when my tutor gave me feedbacks and advices into how I should rearrange my ideas and progress
Discipline Specific Knowledge
I've learned to do se the beauty in simple things around us. With this ability, I've learned to analyze as well as create good designs consciously.
Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
As the name of the module, I became capable of thinking creatively and critically, especially in the Define stage. I've grown to be capable of analysing problems and ideas and arrive at decisions in order to proceed.
Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
I faced many challenges, especially in reading 2 books in a short amount of time. However, my interest in design made the process as fun as it was challenging
Communication Skills
I've learned to communicate with my tutor whenever I was stuck, or when I was in doubt about what to do. With limited time in tutorials, I learned to ask smart and crucial questions
Intrapersonal Skills
I am now capable of reflecting upon my past work and ethics. I believe I have done well as I was able to complete the assignment without last-minute rushing. Despite having obstacles, I overcame them with grit and calmness.
