Progress

Progress

This project is designed to introduce and identify the primary elements of form in the order of their growth from the point to a one-dimensional line, from the line to a two-dimensional plane, and from the plane to a three-dimensional volume. Each element is first considered as a conceptual element, then as a visual element in the vocabulary of architectural design.

Identification of points and lines

6 pictures of interior designs were selected. They were analysed to identify points and lines. This also served as a spark of inspiration for our model. Patterns were made consciously to further explore on the conversion to 3-D model later on

2-D to 3-D

A pattern was selected for it to be developed into a 3-D model. This pattern was chosen for its 'windmill' like pattern. It looked like on interesting enough to be developed into a concept later on

Concept sketches

Sketches were made to properly portray the form of the model. It took into account of varying height of planes, and the nature of each plane (whether is it fully planar or linear)

Mock-up

A mock-up was built to test out the structure envisioned. Simple bamboo sticks and butter paper was used.

Amendments

With model analysisation, a pattern too repetitive could be seen on the top. To resolve this, a strong overhead horizontal plane could be introduced to throw things off. The concept of spirals progressed into a crystal, spiraling under the plane. A balance of solid and void was taken into account, as well as the plane-line dichotomy.

Second Mock-up

A second mockup was built in order to test out the idea progression from the first mockup. The spiraling movement was made much clearer with specifically determined heights of each. Some parts were removed in order to make the model more cohesive as one piece

Amendments

With model analysation once again, the 'push and pull' concept and the balance between solid and void was taken more into consideration. A perforated plane was introduced to create tension in order to tie the model together. Two separate planes was introduced to strike balance with the enormous void underneath the overhang.

Final Model

The final model was made with modelling board. This material was chosen as the sides of it was white, as opposed to brown in a mounting board.

Lifelong Learning

I've learned to progress independently apart from the weekly tutorials available and be disciplined. I was also intellectually engaged when my tutor gave me feedbacks and advices into how I should rearrange my ideas and progress

Discipline Specific Knowledge

I've learned to do learn from real-life examples form my tutor's pinterest boards as well as documentaries. With these knowledge, I've learned to properly apply those knowledge by making them a guideline to dive deeper into its definition.

Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

I faced many challenges, especially in getting inspiration and re-analyzing mockups. When I was advised to improve on it, I searched and learned from references online.

Communication Skills

I've learned to communicate with my tutor whenever I was stuck, or when I was in doubt about what to do. With limited time in tutorials, I learned to ask smart and crucial questions

Intrapersonal Skills

I am now capable of reflecting upon my past work and ethics. I believe I have done well as I was able to complete the assignment without last-minute rushing. Despite having obstacles, I overcame them with grit and calmness.
