Progress

Progress

Before even starting, I made sure to familiarise myself with the assignment brief. We had to pick an area of interest, and present research on at area in a micro and macro view, presenting its tangible and intangible components. I picked USJ 10 Taipan as my place of interest because I grew up there, thus very familiar to its components.

The Master Plan

I used a similar approach as the Nature Journal in this assignment. I first gathered all research and information on Subang Jaya (macro) and Taipan (micro). I also based the maps off Google Earth and Google Maps as recommended by my lecturer.

I found birthing ideas for a future development proposal difficult, because it wasn't something I thought about before, not was it something I could simply find online. Thus, I talked to my dad about it, and he gave me a very great starting point, which was to tackle he biggest problem in taipan: traffic.

Infographics

Once all my information was ready, I looked for ways to transform the multitude of bulleted information into infographics. I've decided to do monochrome so I redrew suitable infographics I found online and redrew them with the color scheme suitable to my Travel Guide Phamplet

Illustrations

For the "Future Development" part where we had to propose strategies to improve the area of interest, I could not find any images or sketches online that could fully illustrate my idea. I had to draw them out from my visualisation, and also had to tweak similar illustrations I found online to what I had envisioned in my mind.

Maps and Diagrams

There were several maps and diagrams that once again could not be found online as it was up to us to analyze and recreate our very own map and diagram, representing our very own information that we intend to. So, I redrew them using Procreate, following the monochromatic colour scheme.

Arrangement

I also put a lot of thought into the arrangement of the sections of the information. I wanted to take advantage of the fact that all pages will be pieced into one whole travel brochure, and would want each page to connect with each other rather than just a compilation of individual pages.

Pieces of a puzzle â€‹

Once all my information, diagrams and drawings are ready, transferred them into Canva. At this stage, I focused on typing the information in and adjusting the diagrams so they look scaled to each other.

The Puzzle

After designing individual pages, I pieced it together to check if they came together as I envisioned it to. Fortunately, it did. I then added elements that connected from page to page, such as the "zoom in" lines.

Drawing

I started to transfer the Canva designs into paper manually. I used pencil to draw it out first and then used felt-tip pens to outline and render the drawings. Drawing 8 pages worth of sketches almost killed me when I did it alone and in silence.

This period of time was coincidently the semester break for A-levels student, and so I took this opportunity to catch up with some of them while drawing. I also did it together with Ashleigh, a classmate, while ranting about how ENBE was dreadfully interesting!

Colouring

Despite it being monochrome, I had to sketch and use grey tones of alcohol markers to render my drawings. This, again, was a tedious process and mundane process. I decided to watch a Chinese drama while doing it. My supportive friends also was curious about my process, and they encouraged me a lot throughout the assignment.

Lifelong Learning

I learned to learn independently and be intellectually engaged during lectures and tutorials. Whenever my tutors and lecturers provided feedback, I changed accordingly whlist learning something new each time.

8-tgc-icons-horizontal_edited.jpg
Discipline Specific Knowledge

I learned to convert my observations and knowledge I've gathered from young into an official document, and also understood the involvement of local authorities in Taipan.

8-tgc-icons-horizontal_edited.jpg
Digital Literacy

I learned to be effective in using a digital design app, Canva, when arranging the first digital draft. I also became capable of using Procreate fluently, learning the importance of layers.

Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

I learned to think critically and creatively to come up with development ideas after analyzing the condition and the nature of the place. There were also moments where I had to find ways to turn information into infographics yet, convey the same information as the bulleted points

Global Perspective

I learned to be aware of the environment and condition of my area of interest. Although I grew up here, it opened my eyes to things I've never seen before. Now, I can't unsee them, and that became a very huge learning lesson.

Intrapersonal Skills

I've learned to manage my time effectively. During this period of time, I had 4 assignments to juggle all at once and i managed to finish this assignment 2 weeks before submission, yet keeping on track with other assignments.
