Building Construction Materials

Project 1:
Materials Application: Architectural and Structural

Overview

Building materials are used in a variety of ways. The materials used on buildings, as well as their placement, can influence their appearance and image. This project is intended to provide students with exposure to construction materials that are commonly utilised in building design. As a result, we must select ONE of the listed architects to undertake a case study on buildings created by the architect in the context of building materials applications as architectural and structural elements, as well as its relationship to the design idea of the chosen structures.

Task

We must select a 'interesting' structure constructed by one of the architects on the list. Based on the chosen building, we must identify five (5) architectural construction materials and two (2) structural building materials. We will also research the principles and concepts behind the material and building decisions. In addition, students must describe the installation of one (1) of the materials used on the chosen structure. Buildings can be of any age or time period. The findings must be neatly compiled in two (2) A3 papers.

Expected Outcome

We should go into more detail on the architect and the history of the structure. The architectural and structural materials should be evaluated based on their suitability and material selection in terms of concept, characteristics, materiality, structural, non-structural, and aesthetical value on the building's selected spaces. The presentation board should be easy to understand and creative in its composition.

Reflection

Through this project, I have learned many many things. The first being the basics of materiality and how it not only affects the structural system, but also the architectural design and concept. Thanks to Kengo Kuma and by project choice of building, I can really see that material selection is not just aesthetics, it can also show how it represents its country. I also learned how material selection can have an emotional connection with its users.

I definitely have room for improvement when it comes to understanding structural details in detail. Thanks to my lectures, I am able to improve on that.

Project 2:
Construction Detailing of Building Elements

Overview

This project requires us to use drawings to demonstrate our knowledge and comprehension of building construction. It will place a greater emphasis on architectural element detailing and technical understanding.

Task

We need to create a construction drawing set with the construction details of building parts on the superstructure in a group of 6-7 people. It will also be necessary to construct a physical model.

Expected Outcome

Floor layouts should include high-quality construction material and specification symbols. The building sections should also demonstrate correctness and line weight, as well as technical drawings. The actual model should depict a portion of the building, complete with workmanship and detailing.

Reflection

Through this project, I have learned in detailed on how technical construction works. It went as detailed in understanding the layers of each floor, roof, and wall. I've also learned the common conventions of materials (eg. material thickness and building intervals)
